Legato Exercises
These exercises arose from a combination of my ever-growing fascination with opera and my unrelenting impatience of mindlessly repetitive exercises. The goal of these exercises is to replicate the acquisition of beautiful legato playing that other, more reputable exercise books achieve while keeping the mind of the performer engaged in the playing of a musical phrase. Each exercise comes directly from a passage in the principal flute part of either Samson and Delilah by Saint-Saens, Romeo and Juliet by Gounod, or Der Rosenkavalier by Strauss and has been expanded upon to span the entire range of the flute.
